![]() The Empire had heavily mined their own entrenchments as they fell back. The abos were still taking losses in their new positions. A river of stormtrooper blood had been lost defending them, while an ocean of abo blood had been spilled taking the positions. A hundred meters from where he rested sat the lost Fortress Treasure Island and her twin sister, the Fortress Venetian, across the shattered Las Vegas Boulevard. It had cost them tens of thousands of casualties but they had finally levered the stormtroopers to give ground. The abos had pushed hard for the last seven weeks in his sector. It wasn't as if SF-4738 cared for the unseen, screaming enemy. Any trooper that stayed stoopa got gobbled up by the Americans. Imperial forces had honed their skills to a vibroblade's edge here in Vegas. He was hidden inside a well camouflaged sniper blind only three meters from where SF-4738 sat, but the scout-sniper was all but invisible. "Cry me a comet shower." JO-3003 grumbled at the stricken abo. A sonic mine could turn an abo's brain to mush faster than the attentions of a Bor gullet. SF-4738 heard the tell-tale pop of a distant subsonic mine, followed by maddening screams somewhere out in the darkness. It was the simple math of war, he thought. The abos could win this battle by bringing enough artillery forward to crush the Empire, and the Empire could win by killing the abos in star cruiser lots by orbital bombardment, hopefully before the army in Las Vegas starved to death. Both sides' air defenses were too efficient and their air forces too battered to put much effort into contesting for air control any more. SF-4738 hadn't spied a TIE or an abo airspeeder over the city during the day in weeks. With dawn the skies over Las Vegas were clear of both sides' airspeeders once again. Their supply drops were scattered across the Legion's lines. Now the Navy had turned to high-speed approaches with four-winged, Zeta-class cargo shuttles. Even worse, the wounded could no longer be brought out. Heavy equipment and reinforcements could no longer be brought into the city. The Americans had brought forward enough anti-airspeeders weapons to make landing in the city almost suicidal. The Empire had attempted to make low altitude supply runs on the besieged city in the dark, making for a lively night. Unfortunately, there was nothing to be had. His stomach grumbled for something, anything, for breakfast. He sipped from his canteen listening to the sounds of the breaking dawn approaching. ![]() ![]() SF-4738 sat in a cut in the wall of a covered trench at the most northern position in the Imperial lines.
